Step 1: Identify good friends from your circle of influence
Step 2: Determine what type of party suits you and your friends
Step 3: Determine the venue .. (home or local establishment – many establishment will donate space)
Step 4: Select the best time to assure maximum attendance
Step 5: Determine what the winner gets .. Trophies are good and often will be donated to such a worthy cause – you can often get other prizes donated.
Step 6: Send out the invitations .. Get RSVPs so you know how to plan .. Have the attendees bring food or refreshments to minimize cost and maximize donations or find a restaurant that will donate to showcase their great food!
Step 7: Don’t forget the thank you calls and notes. Your gratitude will make everyone feel a part of the success.
Whatever event you choose don’t be afraid to ask local businesses to donate items to help with your fundraiser. Many are happy to help as well as getting the publicity (be sure and make signs that say who has helped). Use your network of friends, family, and co-workers to make it the best event possible. People like to help. We have also found that if you are comfortable telling your story , explaining that gastroparesis means “paralyzed stomach”, people will want to help. You don’t have to get too personal, saying you have difficulty eating “normal” food is enough for people to understand the seriousness of the disease.
